Why is being grateful important?
Expressing gratitude reminds you how fortunate you are – you have a loving family, you and your family are healthy, you have a job, you have a roof over your head, you have food on the table, you have a car that works, etc.
Being grateful is a fantastic tool to turn your frown upside down. If you’re having a bad day or in a bad mood, showing gratitude instantly makes you feel better. It turns negative energy into positive immediately.
Five Ways to Show Gratitude
It really doesn’t take much effort to express your gratitude and if you make a daily habit out of it you will notice positive changes not only within yourself but also your surroundings. Here are five easy ways to be grateful:
1. Say it
When was the last time you told someone you were grateful of them? Verbally expressing your gratitude to someone if done in a sincere manner has an amazing effect not only on you but also on the recipient. A mere “thank you” that comes from the heart is like saying “I love you”.
2. Think it
I was once told that if you want someone to treat you better, think of that person in a positive and loving light. If verbal expression is not your thing, let gratitude permeate your thoughts. When I wake up in the morning, the only thoughts that I allow are thoughts of love and gratefulness. In my mind, I say thank you for not only the wonderful things but also the challenging situations in my life.
3. Write it
Whether it’s by email or a letter, conveying your gratitude in a written format is quite powerful. There’s a couple of ways you can do this – one, you can write to someone letting them know how grateful you are for having them in your life, or thanking them for something that they did for you, etc. And two, in your journal or diary, you can write down all the things that you are grateful for.
4. Meditate it
Meditation is the practice of enriching your soul. One of the ways to enrich your soul is to meditate on the things that you are fortunate of – this is a form of active meditation. I find this to be one of the most, if not the most powerful and effective method of being grateful.
5. Live it / show it
Living your life from a place of gratitude is an amazing achievement. So imagine your life – the activities you do, the people that you meet, the decisions that you make, the journey that you take, the situations that you encounter, etc. – being acted upon from the position of gratitude? Your life would be bliss.
